When In Rome...

When in Rome, you go to the Bocca della Verita and stick you hand in the sculpture's mouth. If you haven't been truthful, it'll chop off your hand. In ancient times, that was the purpose of the Bocca. Kind of a very direct of the Santa Claus 'naughty or nice' principal.

When in Rome, you also drink from the innumerable public water spigots and fountains around town. The pics below are of us downing the pure, delicious—and free—water from the Pietro Bernini fountain at the bottom of the Spanish Steps. This is one minute's walk from our hotel. The water was refreshing in the 100 degree heat today.

The chiesa behind Grady and Jo Ann is at the top of the Spanish Steps. There's a Medici palazzo next door.

And, of course, when in Rome, you go to another famous fountain—the physically overwhelming Trevi Fountain, designed by Leon Battista Alberti. This is the spot where people throw coins into the water to signify their wish to return to Rome.
